We, the residents of Besant Nagar have revived the cooperative movement, envisaged by the Father of our Nation, by bringing together the Residents’ Welfare Associations functioning in different localities of Besant Nagar to form the Besant Nagar Residents’ Welfare Federation (BReWFed).

The Federation has set up a cooperative store for procuring materials required by the members of the society at wholesale prices, which is up to 40-50 per cent of the retail prices in respect of certain articles like vegetables. The premises taken over to run the cooperative stores by the combined might of the members of the society is manned by housewives, especially of the senior citizens, against an honorarium they will earn. Further, members of the society will get dividends against the investments they make while raising the fund for running of the society. Members can also produce goods like provisions, snacks etc., in their houses for marketing through the store counter and earn a profit. This will also enable the housewives and senior citizens to use their spare time to make an earning. They can also supervise the store’s functioning in shifts of shorter duration and thus earn honorarium. Such manpower utilization will help the cooperative society to keep its overhead expenses low. The society will ensure supply of the materials to the members in the van owned by the society by repeated rounds in the locality during the course of the day.

Meeting all the requirements of the residents by their own cooperative societies will keep so many undesirable vendors away from the area, which will contribute to enhanced security and cleanliness of the locality..
